The Cloud Phone, as opposed to conventional phones, processes data not through the CPU integrated on the device, but using the computational power of the cloud, to which it is linked through a 5G or low-latency optical connection.
Huawei and China Mobile have collaboratively developed the Mobile Cloud Phone, a pioneering solution that leverages the computational capabilities of the cloud to liberate itself from the hardware constraints of traditional devices. This innovative project has been acknowledged with the 2023 “Compute-enabled Innovative Application” award, bestowed by the esteemed China People’s Posts and Telecommunications News, which falls under the Department of Media and Communication of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China. The Mobile Cloud Phone is the culmination of two years of intense collaboration and was unveiled on May 17, 2023, in conjunction with World Telecommunications and Information Society Day.
In contrast to traditional phones that process data using the integrated CPU, the Cloud Phone harnesses the computational power of the cloud using a 5G or low-latency optical connection. Users can take advantage of this groundbreaking service simply by downloading the relevant application or via the official WeChat account. They can then subscribe to the virtual “Cloud Phone” service via HTML5 or an applet, thereby having access to cloud computing anytime, anywhere. The Mobile Cloud Phone, thanks to 5G’s ultra-broadband connectivity, transcends the physical limitations of devices. Huawei technologies have integrated the latest advancements on a cloud foundation using Arm chip architecture to enhance the cloud phone experience. The Monbox software architecture doubles the cloud phone density per server and reduces end-to-end latency. Super-resolution and AVS3 video streams provide high definition at low bit rates, while instruction stream separation and rendering minimize latency and traffic consumption while maintaining image quality.
