Pre-made Pizza and Quiche Prices are Significantly Higher in Austria

Attention pizza lovers: If you are residing in Austria and are a fan of ready-made pizza and quiche, prepare your pockets for some hefty prices. According to a recent analysis by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, Austria experienced one of the most significant price hikes in these food items last year. The prices of ready-made pizza and quiche in Austrian stores in December 2023 were, on average, 9.5 percent more than what they were in the previous year.

Expensive flatbread in Austria

Compared to the average EU increase of 5.9 percent, which can be referred to as “pizzaflation,” the price increase in Austria was significantly higher. This steep price hike forced Austrians to dig deeper into their pockets to enjoy their favorite flatbreads. The only countries that recorded higher price increases were Hungary (+13.4 percent), Luxembourg (+11.3 percent), Latvia (+10.6 percent), and Germany (+9.9 percent).

Frozen pizza paradise Netherlands

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Netherlands experienced a frozen pizza price deflation of 0.9 percent. This means that the prices of frozen pizza in the Netherlands actually decreased. Other countries where price increases remained low include Denmark (+0.6 percent) and Belgium (+1 percent). Although the overall “pizzaflation” rate from December 2021 to December 2022 saw an increase of 15.9 percent across the EU, it has significantly slowed down since.

One important point to note is that these statistics do not include data on the “real” pizza served in restaurants or pizzerias. There is often debate about whether a ready-made pizza can truly be considered a “real” pizza.

Despite the significant decrease in “Pizza inflation” in Austria in 2023, it remains above average in a European comparison. However, in the Netherlands, pizza lovers can still enjoy pizza at affordable prices.
