Travis Scott, Aya Nakamura, Eminem, and many other high-profile stars have embraced the new-age digital era by delivering performances that are entirely online, primarily within the realms of video games. The latest to join this innovative trend of virtual shows is none other than pop queen, Lady Gaga. She is set to feature prominently in the upcoming Fortnite festival, scheduled for Thursday, February 22.
Lady Gaga, at 37, is making a comeback in a rather unconventional way; she is coming to the world of video games. She recently revealed that she will be a character in the popular game, Fortnite. During an online festival on Thursday, February 22, she will be delivering a virtual concert. Although this is a first for Lady Gaga, Fortnite is no stranger to hosting celebrities, having featured a plethora of stars over the recent years.
To announce this exciting news, Lady Gaga took to social media and humorously corrected a spelling mistake she had made in an October 2019 post. She asked, «Whatâs Fortnight ?» In the same post, she also shared a photo of her character’s avatar, especially created for this event. The official Fortnite festival account was quick to express its excitement over this news, stating, “You’ve been asking for this for years. […] Lady Gaga is our featured artist for Fortnite Festival Season 2. Tremble!”
Just last week, as part of the second edition of the festival, video game enthusiasts were treated to an exclusive preview of the music video for Popular, a song by The Weeknd, Playboy Carti, and Madonna.
Many other international artists have leveraged the popularity of this video game to connect with fans in a unique way. In April 2020, during the lockdown, Travis Scott held a ten-minute show named Astronomical through the game. According to Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, this concert attracted more than 12 million unique viewers during its inaugural broadcast. Other artists who have followed suit include Ariana Grande, Aya Nakamura, Marshmello, and Eminem. However, the company has remained tight-lipped about the compensation offered to these artists for their participation.
