Inter, Germany, and the world of football have suffered a grave loss. Andreas Brehme, former Nerazzurri left back and world champion with Germany at Italia ’90, has passed away at the age of 63 due to a fatal cardiac arrest. Brehme, who was fondly known as ‘Andy’, was recommended to the Nerazzurri by Lothar Matthaeus in 1988 and had an illustrious career with the club, winning the Scudetto in 1989, an Italian Super Cup, and a UEFA Cup in 1991.

Brehme leaves behind his partner Susanne Schaefer and two adult children from his previous marriage to Pilar. Inter will honor Brehme’s memory by wearing mourning bands during their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. Brehme was a lifelong fan of the Nerazzurri and had even posted about the match on Instagram just hours before his death.

The footballer’s career was marked by significant victories and achievements. Brehme was also a world vice champion in 1986 and European vice champion in 1992 with the German national team. He had a total of 86 appearances and 8 goals. Brehme was known as one of the strongest full-backs of his generation. His career began in Barmbek-Uhlenhorst and Saarbruckenn and then spent five years in Kaiserslautern. He played for Bayern Munich for two seasons, winning a German championship and a German Super Cup. He then moved to Milan, where he won the 1988-89 scudetto, an Italian Super Cup, and a UEFA Cup with Inter. After a spell at Real Zaragoza, he returned to Kaiserslautern for another five seasons, winning a German Cup, a second division championship, and another edition of the Bundesliga. Post-retirement, he began his coaching career, leading Kaiserslautern, Unterhaching, and working as Giovanni Trapattoni’s assistant in Stuttgart.
