Petri Koivisto has Passed Away

Kiiming’s Kiekko-Poikien’s prodigy, Petri Koivisto, tragically passed away at a young age of 37. Born on November 15, 1986, Koivisto made a name for himself as a remarkable goalkeeper. His sudden death on January 26, 2024, has been confirmed by his former team, Oulu Kärpät.

Koivisto started his journey from Kiiming’s Kiekko-Poj to Oulu’s Kärppi as a C-junior, and his prowess led him to become the reserve coach of the SM league team at a very young age. He was a crucial part of Kärppie’s team as the second goalkeeper during the 2003–04 and 2005–06 seasons. His contributions were instrumental in the Oulu team winning the bronze medal in the Championship during the last season.

Between the years 2006 and 2008, Koivisto displayed his skills for Mestis, initially for Kajaani Hoki and later for TuTo. His performance was exceptional, leading to Mestis’ championship victories in both clubs. His talent did not go unnoticed as the hockey website Jatkoaika named Koivisto in their star crew of the season during the 2007–08 season.

In the 2008–09 season, Koivisto made a return to Kärppi where he spent three seasons. In the spring of 2009, Kärpät went head-to-head with JYP in the SM league finals, eventually winning the championship.

Post the 2011 season, Koivisto moved to Espoo. He was able to play 22 games for the Blues before the contract was terminated in the fall of 2011 due to personal reasons. Despite this setback, Koivisto’s performance was outstanding and according to his statistics, he was the best goalkeeper in the SM league that fall.

The 2011–12 season marked the end of Koivisto’s playing years.
