Nurse Trapped and Crushed in Terrifying Accident Involving MRI Machine in the US

A nurse in California recently experienced a horrifying accident when she was trapped between an MRI machine and a bed at a medical center. The nurse, Ainah Cervantes, suffered severe crushing injuries that required surgery after the bed was pulled into the MRI machine by its magnetic force. The incident occurred in February, but it took several months for the investigation to be completed.

According to reports, Cervantes explained to investigators that she was being pushed by the bed and had to run backward to avoid being smashed underneath. She sustained a severe laceration that necessitated surgery, while the patient who fell from the bed to the floor was unhurt.

The investigation conducted by the California Department of Public Health found that the Redwood City center had failed to provide radiologic services in a safe manner. The probe highlighted several missteps leading up to the incident, including the absence of MRI personnel inside the room during the accident. Furthermore, the incident violated several of Kaiser’s MRI safety policies.

The investigation also revealed that the staff had not received safety training and that the hospital had neglected to test the door alarm. In response to the incident, Sheila Gilson, senior vice president for Kaiser Permanente San Mateo, assured that the nurse received immediate care and support. Gilson acknowledged the rarity of such occurrences but emphasized the need to understand why accidents happen and implement changes to prevent their recurrence.

The nurse’s horrifying ordeal serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with MRI machines and the importance of strict safety measures in medical facilities.
