A mother in Georgia is speaking out after her fourth-grade daughter was allegedly hit by a staff member at Dutchtown Elementary School in Henry County. Britney Walker claims that her daughter, Nevaeh, and several other students were struck in the back while walking out of the classroom after asking a paraprofessional for laptop chargers. The incident has left Nevaeh with visible marks and afraid to return to school.
According to 11Alive, Nevaeh explained, “She literally hit us in our backs, and we had two people that saw what happened.” Another teacher took them to a quiet room where they could write a statement about the incident. Four other students were also involved.
The school principal reached out to Walker on Tuesday, prompting her to pick up her child. Walker said she was informed that Nevaeh was “physically assaulted,” but not sexually. When she looked at her daughter’s back, she noticed red marks that resembled hand lines. Photos obtained by a local news station show the scratch marks.
Henry County Schools has placed the employee on administrative leave while an investigation takes place. Walker also filed a report at the local police station. However, she believes more accountability is needed. “It’s nowhere you can go and assault kids where you don’t go to jail. If I abuse my daughter, I’d be in jail. So why would she be different? She should not be able to ever work in a school system ever again,” she stated.
In a similar incident in Tennessee, a mother decided to withdraw her autistic daughter from school after accusing teachers of verbally assaulting her. The investigation into both cases is ongoing.
