India Welcomes US Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence

New Delhi: Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has expressed support for US President Joe Biden’s executive order aimed at reducing the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI). In an interview with NDTV, Chandrasekhar stated that India shares the same perspective as the US in prioritizing user safety in tech policymaking. He also addressed concerns about job losses due to AI, emphasizing the importance of acquiring new skills.

Chandrasekhar praised the US government’s actions and highlighted the collaboration between India and the US in the field of AI. He stated that both countries view technology through the lens of safety, trust, and accountability. While acknowledging that each country may have a different approach, Chandrasekhar proposed the creation of a framework for preventing user harm. He emphasized that AI has the potential to enhance the digital economy and urged for responsible regulation that does not hinder its development.

Regarding the timeline for the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI), Chandrasekhar acknowledged that AGI has been a topic of discussion for decades. However, he noted the recent exponential progress in AI and predicted that AGI would likely be achieved within our lifetimes. He attributed this progress to advancements in graphics processing units (GPUs) and AI compute.

Addressing concerns about job displacement, Chandrasekhar reassured that technological disruptions have historically created new opportunities rather than eliminating jobs entirely. He emphasized the need for individuals to adapt and acquire flexible and dynamic skills to navigate these changes. Chandrasekhar viewed disruption as a natural part of progress and urged people to embrace it rather than fear it.

When asked about the potential weaponization of AI and the compliance of countries with AI standards, Chandrasekhar acknowledged that there are no guarantees. However, he expressed confidence in governments’ maturity and understanding of the need for regulation. Chandrasekhar referenced an article written by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, which emphasized the importance of ensuring AI benefits all of humanity.

Finally, Chandrasekhar dismissed claims made by opposition leaders about their iPhones being hacked by state-sponsored actors, stating that it was merely a tactic during election season. He called for Apple to clarify the situation and stated that the government would conduct an investigation.

Overall, Chandrasekhar’s comments reflect India’s support for the regulation of AI to prioritize user safety while also recognizing the potential of AI in driving the digital economy.
