Cultural Revelation: Americans Astonished by Europe’s Broad Definition of ‘Near’

A British woman has caused a stir online after stating that a location two hours away from her hometown is not considered close. American viewers were quick to retaliate, arguing that such a small distance is indeed nearby for them. However, a Florida man pointed out that it would take considerably longer just to leave the state. This sparked a conversation about the vast geographical differences between the countries and their contrasting viewpoints on distances.

The incident occurred on September 19 when Melody Snook, a popular TikToker from Bournemouth, England, posted a comedy skit in which she pretended to be an American quizzing her about her location in the UK. Snook repeatedly dismissed the American character’s suggestions that her hometown was close to major English cities like London or Manchester, insisting that they were not.

The video quickly went viral, amassing 1.4 million views and over 3,000 comments. Many American viewers were left perplexed by Snook’s perspective, as they pointed out that it takes under three hours to drive between her hometown and the English capital, considering it practically on her doorstep. This led to questions about the European definition of proximity.

In response, some Americans explained that driving much further than two hours is common in the US, especially for events like concerts or sporting events, often making a return trip on the same day. They debated what distance would be considered lengthy in the US, with estimations ranging from six to 10 hours of driving.

On November 2, the conversation was reignited when another TikToker, @manbrose_usmc, posted a response video to Snook’s original clip, insisting that the two locations in England were indeed close to each other. He compared his experience growing up in Pensacola, Florida, where a 13-hour drive wouldn’t even take him out of the state, to the fact that it only takes half that time to travel from London to the furthest town he could find, Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The response video garnered 1.5 million views and over 4,700 comments, many of which were from UK viewers arguing that US standards didn’t apply due to the significant geographic differences between the countries. They highlighted that Britain is much more compact and densely populated, making a two-hour drive comparatively lengthy.

While many American commenters remained unconvinced, one viewer put the geographical disparities into perspective by comparing the distances between cities in Europe and the US. For example, Paris and London are around 212 miles apart in a straight line, closer than the towns of Paris and London in Texas, which are about 312 miles apart despite being in the same state.

This discussion adds to a growing list of observations about the differences between life in the US and Europe, which have become popular and controversial topics online. TikTok has become a platform for residents from various locations to debate and discuss cultural disparities, ranging from tipping practices to attitudes towards water consumption, with consensus rarely being reached.
