An Ohio-class submarine, capable of carrying advanced ballistic or Tomahawk cruise missiles, has arrived in the Mediterranean Sea as the United States strengthens its defensive position amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. The confirmation came from CENTCOM, the Department of Defense combatant command responsible for US forces in the Middle East and Central Asia, who shared a photo of the submarine on social media. Typically, the location of submarines is kept secret for security reasons, making this disclosure significant. The photo suggests that the submarine passed through the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean and Red Seas via Egypt. The largest of the 14 ballistic submarines controlled by the US Navy, the vessel is reported to be equipped with ballistic munitions, although the exact weapon configuration could not be independently verified. It remains unclear whether the submarine was deployed in response to new intelligence or as part of the US’s existing defensive military posture in the region. The submarine’s arrival coincided with high-level diplomatic visits by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Qatar. Last month, the US dispatched two carrier strike groups to the eastern Mediterranean to demonstrate its support for Israel and act as a deterrent to hostile forces, including Iran.
