Ukrainian military officials have reported that a Russian missile carrier in Crimea has suffered significant damage. The ship, believed to be the Askold, was targeted by Ukraine before it had the chance to join the Black Sea Fleet. Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk announced the attack on the Zaliv shipyard in Crimea, suggesting that French-supplied SCALP missiles were used. Oleshchuk also mentioned that Russia had stationed one of its modern warships, capable of carrying Kalibre cruise missiles, at the shipyard. Russia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the damage to one of its ships, stating that Ukraine launched 15 cruise missiles at the shipyard, with 13 being shot down. Footage posted by Ukrainian ministerial advisor Anton Gerashchenko showed a large blaze at the shipyard. Satellite images suggested that the damaged ship was the Askold, a new corvette undergoing testing in the Black Sea. The vessel was set to officially join the fleet this year and is equipped with eight Kalibr cruise missiles. The Black Sea Fleet, known for targeting Ukrainian infrastructure, has been a prime target for Ukraine. In September, Ukraine damaged two ships at the port of Sevastopol, prompting Russia to redistribute its fleet.
