Sunil Gavaskar Furious Over Defaced Indian Flag at Cricket World Cup Match, Urges Police Intervention

India emerged victorious over South Africa in a Cricket World Cup 2023 match, defeating them by a massive margin of 243 runs. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team showcased a remarkable collective effort to dominate the Proteas throughout the game. Batting first at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, India posted an imposing total of 326 for 5. In response, South Africa struggled to make an impact and could only manage a meager score of 83 runs before being bowled out.

After the match, Shreyas Iyer, who played a crucial role in India’s triumph with a knock of 77 runs, joined former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri, along with presenter Mayanti Langer for a post-match discussion. While Shastri and Langer posed questions to Iyer, Gavaskar refrained from doing so and later explained why.

Gavaskar revealed that he had intended to ask a question but got distracted by an Indian flag with a company’s name on it. He emphasized that defacing the Indian flag is strictly prohibited and suggested that the police should not only confiscate such flags but also warn individuals against using the flag for advertising purposes. Apologizing for his distraction, Gavaskar acknowledged Shastri’s desire to ask Iyer a question but was preoccupied with the flag-bearers.

In terms of the game itself, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja were standout performers for India in their comprehensive victory over South Africa. Kohli, celebrating his 35th birthday, equaled a world record by scoring an unbeaten century (101 not out). His innings propelled India to their formidable total on a challenging Kolkata wicket after they chose to bat first.

Rohit Sharma also made a significant contribution to India’s score, smashing a rapid 40 runs off just 24 balls. In reply, Jadeja displayed his prowess with the ball, taking a five-wicket haul (5 for 33) as India dismantled the South African batting lineup, restricting them to a meager total.

This emphatic win further solidifies India’s position as a formidable team in the Cricket World Cup 2023, while South Africa faces a setback in their campaign.
