Indi Gregory, the eight-month-old baby who was at the center of a legal battle between her parents and the NHS, has passed away after her life support was withdrawn, according to her family. Indi was suffering from an incurable genetic mitochondrial condition and the staff at the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham stated that they could no longer provide any further treatment for her. On Saturday, she was transferred from the hospital to a hospice after the Court of Appeal rejected a legal challenge from her parents, who wanted to bring her home before her life support was removed. In a statement released through Christian Concern, Mr. Gregory expressed his anger, heartbreak, and shame, stating that the NHS and the courts not only deprived Indi of a chance for a longer life but also denied her the dignity of passing away at home with her family. He further added that although they may have taken her body and dignity, they can never take her soul, and they made sure that she would be remembered forever. Indi’s life came to an end at 1:45 am on Monday in her mother’s arms. Last week, the parents’ lawyers requested a High Court judge to allow Indi to be moved to a hospital in Rome for emergency specialist treatment, but the request was denied by Mr. Justice Peel, who ruled that the medical evidence was unanimous and clear. The doctors argued that further treatment would be futile and only prolong Indi’s suffering. Indi, who was born on February 24, was receiving round-the-clock treatment for her condition, which hindered the production of energy in her body’s cells.
