According to reports from Spiegel, which relied on South American media sources, Piñera was piloting the helicopter himself at the time of the accident. It is also reported that three other politicians were on the helicopter with Piñera. Despite the severity of the crash, rescue workers were able to save these individuals, who were found alive at the crash site.
