Mexican Authorities Apprehend Group of Migrants at Main Bus Terminal in Capital City

Mexican Authorities Detain 246 Migrants, Including 50 Children, Near Bus Terminal

Mexican migration authorities announced on Monday that they had apprehended 246 migrants, including over 50 children, near a major bus terminal in the northern part of Mexico City. These children have been placed under the care of social services. This incident highlights the increasing number of people attempting to cross Mexico as they make their way to the United States border. Over the past year, there has been a record high number of migrants apprehended by US authorities, with many fleeing dire economic conditions or violence in their home countries.

According to a statement by Mexico’s migration agency, INM, the migrants were found in various areas around the bus terminal, such as benches, sidewalks, open spaces, and corridors. The migrants originate from Central America, Venezuela, and Haiti. They were detained during migration checks conducted from last Friday through Sunday, following requests from local authorities.

While the adults were transferred to immigration offices, families were placed under the guardianship of children and family welfare services. The bus terminal in question serves as a departure point for numerous buses heading north of Mexico City, including border cities like Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez.

Notably, a significant number of migrants have also managed to cross the treacherous Darien jungle, which separates Panama from the South American continent, this year. Most of them are en route to the United States in search of better opportunities.

To curb the influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border, the United States has resumed direct deportation flights to Venezuela since mid-October. Additionally, the US has expressed its willingness to provide development financing to countries in the Americas that are hosting migrants.

The situation remains complex, with both Mexico and the United States grappling with the challenges posed by the increasing flow of migrants. Authorities continue to work towards finding sustainable solutions to address the root causes of migration and ensure the safety and well-being of those seeking a better life.
