2025 VW ID.7: Revolutionary Electric Sedan Breaks Through SUV Dominance, First Drive Review Reveals

MANE, France – Volkswagen has unveiled its latest flagship sedan, the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7. Unlike previous flagships like the Phaeton, the ID.7 is not aimed at competing with BMW and Mercedes, but rather showcases Volkswagen’s commitment to electric mobility. The sedan offers customers a battery-powered alternative to the Passat and Arteon, with the added advantages of lower weight and improved range. Engineers focused on extending the time between charging stops, resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.23, which falls between the BMW i4 and the Porsche Taycan. Visually, the ID.7 features sharp-looking headlights, a distinctive roof line, and a rear light bar. It measures 195.3 inches long, making it bigger than the American-market Passat and comparable to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Inside, the ID.7 offers spacious seating and a large trunk, with 18.8 cubic feet of storage space. The sedan is powered by an 82-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, which provides a range of 386 miles in European testing conditions. The U.S. range figure has yet to be released. The ID.7 is built on the same MEB platform as other ID Volkswagens and is equipped with an oil-and water-cooled electric motor that produces 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque. It has a rear-wheel-drive configuration and can reach a top speed of 112 mph. An all-wheel-drive variant is expected to be available in 2024. The ID.7 offers a comfortable and smooth ride, with a standard steel suspension system and software that filters out road imperfections. It handles corners relatively flatly, thanks to the battery’s placement under the cabin. The sedan also features a brake energy recuperation function that can be turned on or off, allowing for varying levels of regenerative braking. The ID.7 comes with a head-up display that offers augmented reality navigation, as well as a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
