Warren Woman Dumps Puppy in Dumpster, Engages in Police Chase Before Crashing

A Warren woman was arrested in Farmington Hills after causing a traffic crash and abandoning a puppy in a construction dumpster while attempting to flee from authorities. Selena Maria Martin, 25, was taken into custody on November 8 after driving on a suspended license, speeding, and refusing to stop for police. The incident began when officers tried to initiate a traffic stop on Haggerty Road near 10 Mile Road. Martin accelerated away from the officers, driving recklessly and even into oncoming traffic. Despite the police calling off the pursuit due to the high rate of speed, witnesses reported seeing Martin’s vehicle reach speeds over 100 mph and passing vehicles on the shoulder. Eventually, Martin crashed into another vehicle at an intersection, causing significant damage. She and her passenger fled the scene on foot but were apprehended after attempting to steal another vehicle. Fortunately, no one was injured in the civilian vehicle that was hit by Martin. Following the arrest, officers received reports that Martin and her passenger had abandoned a puppy in a construction dumpster during their attempt to escape. The puppy was safely recovered and has since been adopted by a community member. Martin has a history of fleeing and eluding police, having been previously convicted on two other occasions. On November 10, the investigation was submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutors Office, which authorized a two-count warrant for Martin, including one count of felony Fleeing and Eluding and one count of misdemeanor Driving While License Suspended. She was arraigned before Judge Brady of the 47th District Court and a $10,000 bond was set. Martin remains in custody at the Oakland County Jail. Police Chief Jeff King expressed concern over the increasing incidents of fleeing from police and emphasized that such dangerous and criminal behavior will not be tolerated in the City of Farmington Hills.
