China Unveils Groundbreaking Internet Speeds, Enabling Lightning-Fast Streaming of 150 Movies in Merely a Second

Chinese companies have made a groundbreaking announcement, unveiling the world’s fastest internet network that can transmit data at an astounding rate of 1.2 terabits per second. This speed is over ten times faster than most of the current major internet routes. The project is a collaboration between Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei Technologies, and Cernet Corporation.

The network spans over 3,000 kilometers, connecting Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou through a comprehensive optical fiber cabling system. It has the capacity to transmit data at 1.2 terabits (1,200 gigabits) per second, which is significantly faster than the majority of the world’s Internet backbone networks operating at just 100 gigabits per second. Even the United States, with its recently completed transition to fifth-generation Internet2, operates at 400 gigabits per second.

This Beijing-Wuhan-Guangzhou connection is part of China’s Future Internet Technology Infrastructure, a decade-long initiative and the latest version of the national China Education and Research Network (Cernet). The network was activated in July and officially launched on Monday after surpassing all operational tests and demonstrating reliable performance.

To put the speed of this network into perspective, Huawei Technologies vice-president Wang Lei explained that it is capable of transferring the data equivalent of 150 high-definition films in just one second. Wu Jianping, the FITI project leader from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, stated that the superfast line is not only a successful operation but also provides China with the advanced technology to build an even faster internet.

Comparing the new internet backbone to a superfast train track, Xu Mingwei of Tsinghua University explained that it eliminates the need for 10 regular tracks to carry the same amount of data, resulting in a more cost-effective and manageable system.

It is worth noting that all of the system’s software and hardware have been domestically produced.
