Eight students are facing murder charges after a student was fatally beaten near Rancho High School in Las Vegas. The victim, 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis, died from complications of multiple blunt force injuries. The Clark County coroner’s office confirmed that his death was ruled a homicide. The names of the suspects, who are between the ages of 13 and 17, have not been released due to their age. In Nevada, if a 16 or 17-year-old is charged with murder, the case is automatically moved to the adult system. The incident took place on November 1 near the high school. During a press conference, LVMPD Lt. Jason Johannson stated that all those involved, believed to be 10 people, were students at Rancho High School. He described the video of the attack as “void of humanity” and stated that there was no evidence to suggest it was a hate crime. Eight of the individuals involved have been identified and arrested by the police and FBI. The fight allegedly started over stolen wireless headphones and a vape pen. Jonathan Lewis’ father expressed hope that his son’s death would initiate a conversation about youth violence in the Las Vegas community. The police are seeking assistance in identifying two additional individuals involved in the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact the LVMPD Homicide Section or Crime Stoppers.
