Police are warning shoppers to review their bank statements following the discovery of credit card skimmers at Market Basket stores in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Concord Police Department reported finding a skimming device at the checkout of the Market Basket and Walmart on Storrs Street in Concord, New Hampshire, in October. Surveillance images of the suspects allegedly responsible for installing the skimmers were shared by the police on Monday. The skimming device ring has expanded to four additional stores in the area, including Market Basket stores in Nashua, New Hampshire, Somerville and Reading, Massachusetts, and Haverhill, Massachusetts. Law enforcement agencies throughout New England are investigating similar incidents involving skimmers. The devices function by obtaining sensitive information from credit and debit cards and relaying it to a third party. Police have advised shoppers to be cautious of skimmers that cause the chip reader slot to be inoperable or jammed, forcing customers to swipe their cards and allowing the magnetic reader to steal their card information. Market Basket has stated that it is not aware of any customer information being compromised at this time and is cooperating with authorities to identify the responsible individuals. Shoppers who believe they may have been affected or have information about potential suspects are encouraged to contact local law enforcement. This is an ongoing investigation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
