Kimberly Manzano, a woman from Texas, traveled to New Mexico for abortion care after being denied the service in her home state. Manzano, 34, and her husband, 35, had been trying to get pregnant since April 2022 and were excited to find out they were expecting in November. However, Manzano faced complications during her pregnancy, including an irregular growth on the fetus’ spine and missing limbs. Doctors informed her that there was little chance the baby would survive more than a few days if carried to term. Manzano is one of seven additional women who have joined a lawsuit against Texas, arguing that they were denied abortions despite dangerous pregnancy complications. The lawsuit, filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights in March, challenges Texas’ abortion bans, which include a trigger ban and a ban allowing private citizens to bring civil suits against those involved in abortion procedures. The lawsuit will go before the Texas Supreme Court on November 28, where a preliminary injunction on the bans will be considered.
