Officials in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, are removing Christmas decorations in support of Palestinians during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The city announced via social media and official spokespeople that decorations from previous years are being taken down in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Bethlehem Municipality crews stated that this decision was made to honor the martyrs and show support for those affected by the violence. The city spokesperson explained that the general situation in Palestine, with the ongoing massacre in Gaza and attacks in the West Bank, made it inappropriate to have festive celebrations. Despite its significance to Christians and high religious tourism, Bethlehem’s Christian population has been declining since the mid-20th century. In 1950, Christians constituted over 80% of the population, but now they make up only around 10% in a predominantly Muslim region. Persecution, religious harassment, and low birth rates among Christian communities have contributed to this demographic collapse. In Israel, approximately 185,000 Christians reside, accounting for just under 2% of the population.
