A Navy aircraft overshot the runway at a U.S. Marine base in Hawaii on Monday, resulting in it landing in the water. According to base spokesperson Hailey Harms, there were nine Navy personnel inside the plane at the time of the incident. Fortunately, all nine individuals were able to return safely to shore and no injuries were reported. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation. Harms confirmed that the aircraft, identified as an 8A, did overshoot its landing on the base’s runaway, located approximately 10 miles from Honolulu. The crew on board the plane belonged to the Washington based squadron VP-4 “Skinny Dragons” stationed at Whidbey Island in Washington state, as stated by the Marine Corps. Immediate action was taken by first responders and emergency crews who conducted an initial assessment and used a temporary floating barrier to protect the environment, according to Marine Corps spokesperson Mohammad N. Issa. The aircraft involved in the incident, a Boeing P8A Poseidon, is primarily used for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. It is manufactured by Boeing and shares many parts with the 737 commercial jet. The plane is equipped with advanced radars, sensors, and air-to-air refueling capabilities, as stated on the Navy’s website. A witness to the water landing, Diane Dircks of Illinois, described the scene as “unbelievable.” She and her family had just returned to a dock after their pontoon boat trip was cut short by rainy weather when her daughter spotted the plane in the water. Shortly after, they heard sirens and observed rescue boats arriving. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers involved in military operations and the importance of prompt emergency response.
