Former President Ram Nath Kovind, who leads the committee examining the possibility of “one nation, one election,” has stated that holding simultaneous polls is in the national interest and is not affiliated with any specific political party. Kovind emphasized that this move would benefit the public as the saved revenue could be allocated to development work. He urged all political parties to cooperate, reiterating that this initiative serves the national interest and is not influenced by any political party. The government established an eight-member committee earlier this year, with Kovind as its chairman, to explore this concept. Kovind mentioned that various committees, such as the parliamentary committee, Niti Aayog, and the Election Commission of India, have advocated for the revival of the “one nation, one election” tradition in the country. He has reached out to all registered national parties to gather their suggestions and highlighted their past support for this idea. Kovind stressed that the common people would be the primary beneficiaries, as the saved revenue would be utilized for development projects. The committee’s first meeting in September focused on gathering suggestions and viewpoints from recognized national parties, state government parties, parties represented in Parliament, and other recognized state parties. The Law Commission of India will also be invited to provide their input on this matter. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has long advocated for simultaneous elections, and the appointment of Kovind demonstrates the government’s seriousness in pursuing this idea as several elections approach.
