AIIMS Doctor Reveals the Link Between Air Pollution and Cancer

Air pollution in Delhi-NCR has reached severe levels, prompting doctors and health experts to highlight the dangerous impact it has on human health. Dr. Piyush Ranjan, an Additional Professor at AIIMS, stated that there is scientific evidence linking air pollution to various types of cancer. He also noted that air pollution not only harms the respiratory system but also has direct associations with coronary artery diseases such as heart attacks, brain strokes, and arthritis.

Dr. Ranjan emphasized that it is crucial to understand that air pollution affects multiple systems in the body, not just the respiratory system. The doctor stressed that pollution is linked to coronary artery diseases, cancer, and other health conditions. Experts also warned about the adverse effects on fetuses and the potential for a major health emergency.

Air pollution has been found to damage the brain and heart and can lead to anxiety in all age groups if not addressed properly. On Sunday, the air quality in Delhi remained in the severe category for the fourth consecutive day, with a slight improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 410, compared to 504 on Saturday, according to the System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR-India).

Doctors recommend an AQI of less than 50 for a healthy person. However, the AQI in Delhi has exceeded 400 in recent days, posing a fatal risk for those suffering from lung-related diseases and even increasing the chances of lung cancer.
