A group of divers made a remarkable discovery while exploring a pristine lake in Italy. Nestled among rocks about 80 feet below the surface, they stumbled upon an ancient weapon. The Gas Diving School of Barolino, which the divers belonged to, promptly handed over the artifact to a government archaeological team in Verona. Experts determined that the Bronze Age sword dates back to a period between the late 13th century B.C. and the early 12th century B.C., making it a significant historical find.
The sword, which measures approximately 18 inches in length, possesses a relatively short blade. Such findings are rare in Italy, although similar weapons have been found in other parts of Central Europe and the Balkans. Archaeologists speculate that the sword was intentionally deposited in the lake as a gift, reflecting a practice during the Bronze Age of offering swords and important objects in rivers and lakes.
Interestingly, the location where the sword was discovered is close to an area where several ancient rock depictions have been found. These depictions often feature weapons similar to the one found in the lake. Researchers are now diligently working to determine the origin of the weapon, with indications pointing to a nearby town known for its ancient production center.
Lake Garda, the site of this extraordinary find, is situated in northern Italy, approximately 80 miles west of Venice. The discovery adds another layer of historical significance to the already captivating region.
