Berlin Celebrates Gundula Schulze Eldowy with Two Exhibitions

Although it’s still a bit chilly for genuine dog nights in Berlin, the city is currently in the throes of a celebration. The focus of this celebration is Gundula Schulze Eldowy, whose presence can be seen everywhere at the moment. A significant event taking place is at the Bröhan Museum in Charlottenburg, where she is personally conducting guided tours for a group of Western-socialized cultural citizens. These citizens look suitably thrilled as they walk through the exhibition that showcases her early, explosive work from the GDR. This includes the renowned series, “Berlin on a Dog’s Night.”

During the tour, she narrates interesting anecdotes and stories behind her work. She explains, for instance, how she came across the subjects of her photographs, namely “the fat ones.” She tells the story of a baker who, in her photo, is seen sitting next to his family, looking completely detached. He is in his underwear, exuding a carefree “Don’t worry!” attitude, and sporting a truly spectacular smile.

She recalls the humorous encounter, saying, “He came out of a bar door on Linienstrasse, nearly took the door frame with him, and that’s when I said: Boy, I’ve been waiting for you!” The way she narrates the story, it’s as if she had been waiting for this perfect moment to capture on her camera. Her work and her stories transport the viewers back to a different time, providing them with a unique glimpse into the past.
