China’s military has accused a Philippine vessel of illegally entering waters near Scarborough Shoal without permission, prompting a call for the Philippines to cease its provocations. The South China Sea has been a hotbed of contention between China and the Philippines, with recent disputes centering around a collision between a Chinese coastguard vessel and a Philippine boat. Senior Colonel Tian Junli, spokesperson for the People’s Liberation Army Southern Theater Command, urged the Philippine side to halt its infringement and provocations to prevent further escalation. The contested Scarborough Shoal is claimed by China, the Philippines, and Taiwan. Tian emphasized that the actions of the Philippine vessel have not only violated China’s sovereignty and international law but also the fundamental norms governing international relations, potentially leading to misunderstandings and miscalculations. He stated that China had lawfully followed, monitored, warned, and blocked the ship. Beijing’s claims of sovereignty extend over a significant portion of the South China Sea, encompassing parts of the exclusive economic zones of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. These conflicting claims have fueled increasing maritime tensions and territorial disputes in the region.
