The South China Sea witnessed another tense standoff between China and the Philippines on Friday, as Chinese coast guard ships chased and surrounded Philippine vessels near Second Thomas Shoal. During the confrontation, a Chinese coast guard ship used a water cannon against a Philippine motorboat delivering supplies to Filipino forces stationed at a deteriorating warship on the shoal. This incident highlights the ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea, with China asserting its claim over the entire region, causing friction with neighboring countries and involving the United States as well. The fear is that these confrontations could potentially escalate into an armed conflict involving the US and China. However, Philippine officials emphasized their commitment to defending their sovereignty while avoiding actions that could ignite a larger conflict. Despite the Chinese aggression, the Philippine vessels managed to deliver supplies safely to the marines stationed on the warship. Journalists on board witnessed the dangerous maneuvers, which the Philippines aims to expose as part of a campaign to raise international awareness of China’s growing assertiveness in the region. The Philippine coast guard reiterated their adherence to the rule of law and their refusal to be provoked by China’s tactics. The Chinese presence near Second Thomas Shoal on Friday included 38 ships, including a navy assault craft and a hospital ship. The Philippine coast guard ship BRP Cabra was surrounded multiple times by Chinese vessels but managed to navigate away until it was cornered near the shoal. The commander of the Cabra expressed confidence in following international regulations to prevent collisions. The Philippines plans to continue its efforts to expose China’s aggression through transparency initiatives and garner international support to condemn China’s illegal actions. The US reiterated its support for the Philippines and its commitment to defend its ally in the face of China’s repeated harassment in the South China Sea. The US State Department criticized China’s actions as inconsistent with international law and referenced a 2016 arbitration decision that invalidated China’s expansive claims in the region. China, however, refused to participate in the arbitration and dismissed the ruling as a sham. The Chinese coast guard claimed that its actions were in accordance with the law and accused the Philippines of infringing on China’s rights. China called on the Philippines to cease provocations and remove the grounded vessel. China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have been working towards a code of conduct to prevent war in the South China Sea, but the skirmishes at Second Thomas Shoal are likely to persist, with China surrounding the shoal and the Philippines vowing to defend it at all costs. In a previous incident last month, Chinese and Philippine coast guard ships collided near the shoal, with China accusing the Philippines of trespassing in its waters.
