Collins Dictionary Declares AI as Word of the Year

The abbreviation for artificial intelligence (AI) has been chosen as the Collins Word of the Year for 2023, according to the dictionary publisher. Collins Dictionary’s lexicographers stated that the usage of the term has significantly increased and has become the dominant topic of conversation this year. The managing director of Collins, Alex Beecroft, mentioned that AI has rapidly become as pervasive and integrated in our lives as email or streaming services. The selection was based on an analysis of the Collins Corpus, a database containing over 20 billion words from various written sources such as websites, newspapers, magazines, and books, as well as spoken sources like radio, TV, and everyday conversations. Beecroft added that the word “AI” has undoubtedly been the center of attention in 2023.

Collins Dictionary’s list of notable words for this year also includes “nepo baby,” a term used to describe the children of celebrities who have achieved success in industries similar to their parents. Social media terms like “deinfluencing” or “de-influencing,” which refer to warning followers against certain commercial products, were also included. Additionally, the term “Bazball” gained popularity during the Ashes cricket series between England and Australia this summer. It refers to the playing style advocated by New Zealand cricketer and coach Brendon McCullum, known as Baz, characterized by a relaxed mindset, aggressive tactics, and positive energy.

In 2022, the Collins Word of the Year was “permacrisis,” defined as an extended period of instability and insecurity. Previous selections include “lockdown” in 2020 and “Brexit” in 2016.
