New research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease provides insight into which foods can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The study emphasizes the importance of lifestyle choices in maintaining brain health as people age. While there is no definitive cause or prevention strategy for Alzheimer’s, researchers believe that a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors contribute to the disease. The study highlights the Mediterranean, DASH, and MIND diets as eating patterns associated with cognitive health benefits. The Western diet, characterized by high consumption of fat, processed foods, and meat, is linked to poor cognitive outcomes. Specific foods that support brain health include walnuts, which contain lignans that reduce neurodegeneration and inhibit inflammation in the brain. Berries, rich in anthocyanins, can reduce oxidative stress and the aggregation of tau protein, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. Hazelnuts contain phenolic acid and flavonoids that protect brain cells and reduce protein oxidation and fat peroxidation. Leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, provide folate, lutein, and vitamin K, which support brain health. Coldwater oily fish, like salmon, provide omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, which reduce inflammation and the production of amyloid plaques. Eggs, rich in choline and lutein, aid in the reduction of beta-amyloid and support the production of neurotransmitters. Foods to limit include red meat, butter, whole-fat cheese, pastries, and fried foods, as excessive intake of saturated fats can lead to malfunctioning at the blood-brain barrier and the build-up of plaques associated with Alzheimer’s. Overall, incorporating brain-healthy foods into one’s diet can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
