At present, the United Nations has reported a severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Every single inhabitant of Gaza is battling with malnutrition. According to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the majority of the world’s hungriest people reside within the Gaza Strip, making the situation incredibly dire and critical.
In a recent open debate held at the UN Security Council, Guterres shed light on the devastating reality of the situation in Gaza. He said, “No one in Gaza has enough food. When we consider the 700,000 most food-deprived people around the globe, it’s shocking to realize that four out of every five of these individuals are living in this relatively small area.” This statement underlines the severity of the crisis and the urgent need for international intervention.
The Middle East has been in a state of heightened tension and conflict since October 7 of the previous year. This was triggered by an attack on peaceful Israeli settlements by “Hamas”, a group operating out of the Gaza Strip. The United States and the European Union have both recognized “Hamas” as a terrorist organization, further complicating the situation.
In retaliation to the initial attack, Israel has commenced a large-scale military operation. The main objective of this operation is the complete elimination of Hamas. This is a significant escalation and has further aggravated the already volatile situation in the region.
The conflict has been ongoing for over four months now. During this period, Palestinian sources have reported staggering casualty figures from Gaza. Over 28,400 people have lost their lives, and more than 68,000 individuals have been injured. These figures highlight the devastating human cost of the conflict and the urgent need for a resolution.
