On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to the military units and their commander for their successful capture of the Ukrainian city of Avdiyivka, according to reports by Russian news agencies.
Addressing the commander of the group of central units stationed in Ukraine, Putin expressed, “For the extraordinary military activity, I express my gratitude to all the units under your leadership that took part in the battles for Avdiyivka. Your contribution is immensely valued.”
In a move that marks a significant shift in the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian troops have pulled out from the war-torn eastern town of Avdiyivka. The announcement was made by the newly appointed chief of the Ukrainian army in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
This strategic withdrawal, however, comes at a time when Ukraine is grappling with ammunition shortages. This is due to the failure of the US Congress to pass a resolution on providing military aid to the country. According to reports from the capital city, Kiev, the decision for the troops to pull back was taken with the intention of preventing them from being entirely surrounded by the Russian forces, following months of intense and relentless combat.
The seizure of Avdijivka is a significant move in the larger context of Russia’s objective of achieving complete control over the two provinces that constitute the industrial Donbass region. This victory could also potentially boost President Vladimir Putin’s chances in the upcoming election scheduled for next month.
