Experts criticize Biden’s military deal with China as an “incredibly poor decision,” leading to a significant win for China

President Biden is expected to reach an agreement with China that would impose restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in nuclear weapons. The deal is anticipated to be signed during Biden’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco. The agreement would limit the use of AI in the systems that control and deploy nuclear weapons, as well as in autonomous weapon systems like drones.

The agreement comes at a time when tensions between the two countries have been high. Issues such as China’s spying activities in the U.S. and its military buildup in the South China Sea have strained the relationship. However, concerns about the ethical implications of unrestricted AI use in combat have prompted the need for this agreement.

Experts have expressed mixed opinions on the deal. Phil Siegel, the founder of the Center for Advanced Preparedness and Threat Response Simulation (CAPTRS), believes that the agreement is necessary to prevent the world from becoming a dangerous place. He suggests that other major powers, such as Russia, should also be involved in the pact. On the other hand, Christopher Alexander, the chief analytics officer of Pioneer Development Group, questions the need for such a deal, arguing that it would give up the U.S.’s strategic advantage over China.

Both China and the U.S. have been integrating AI into their military operations, recognizing its potential in combat. However, they have also acknowledged the risks associated with unchecked AI use. Earlier this year, both countries were part of an agreement endorsing the responsible use of AI in the military.

Some experts remain skeptical about China’s commitment to honoring the agreement, pointing to its lack of adherence to previous agreements such as the Paris Climate Agreement. They argue that China’s disregard for human rights and intellectual property raises doubts about its willingness to comply with restrictions on AI use in nuclear weapons.

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
