All lanes of Interstate 40 in the eastbound direction at the South Miami Boulevard exit have been reopened on Sunday, according to the Durham police. This comes after a tragic accident involving a pickup truck that claimed the life of the driver. Unfortunately, this incident was one of two fatal crashes that occurred in the Triangle early on Sunday morning.
Raleigh police reported that another accident took place on Capital Boulevard around 2 a.m., resulting in one fatality and another person being injured. The injured individual has been taken to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, in Durham, a separate deadly collision occurred around 12:45 a.m. The victim, identified as 45-year-old Hector Reyna Gutierrez from Raleigh, lost control of his vehicle on I-40 East near Page Road. He collided with a concrete beam and the support beams for an overhead highway sign, succumbing to his injuries at the scene.
As a result of this tragic incident, the eastbound lanes of I-40 between the Page Road and Miami Boulevard exits will remain closed for several more hours, as stated by the Durham police in a news release. All traffic is being rerouted onto South Miami Blvd. Authorities in Durham are urging anyone with information regarding the accident to contact Investigator J.D. Colquitt at 919-560-4935 ext. 29450.
