Father from Jharkhand tragically passes away hours before son is rescued from Uttarakhand tunnel

A 70-year-old man from Jharkhand passed away due to anxiety just hours before his son was rescued from the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand. The man, Baset alias Barsa Murmu, had been extremely worried about his son, Bhaktu, ever since the tunnel collapse occurred on November 12. Barsa Murmu died at 8 am on Tuesday, approximately 12 hours before Bhaktu was finally rescued.

Local government officials have yet to confirm the exact cause of Barsa Murmu’s death, although it is suspected to be a heart attack. Since the incident, Bhaktu’s mother, Piti Murmu, has become unresponsive and has been in a state of shock.

Barsa Murmu’s son-in-law, Thakar Hansda, who was present when he passed away, stated that the septuagenarian had been anxiously waiting for information about his son’s rescue. Suddenly, he fell off his cot and died.

Civil Surgeon, Dr Jujhar Manjhi, confirmed that they had received information about Barsa Murmu’s death but had not yet received a medical report. Bhaktu, along with 14 other workers from Jharkhand, is currently recovering at AIIMS Rishikesh. Once they are discharged, they will be airlifted to Ranchi, as per Jharkhand Labour Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sharma.

A three-member team from the Jharkhand government was dispatched to Uttarkashi immediately after the tunnel collapse. The operation to rescue the 41 trapped workers in the under-construction tunnel was successfully completed on Tuesday night. The tunnel collapse occurred on November 12, blocking the exit for the workers inside. They were provided with food, medicine, and other essentials through a six-inch pipe inserted through the debris.
