Former Michigan officer caught on surveillance camera assaulting Black teen

In a disturbing incident caught on surveillance camera, a former Michigan police officer has been captured sucker-punching a Black teenager. The officer, identified as Rodriguez, was in the process of booking 19-year-old Jaquwan Smith on a carjacking charge on June 16 when the brutal interaction took place.

According to FOX 2 Detroit, the surveillance footage reveals Rodriguez engaging in conversation with Smith before suddenly and violently punching him in the face. The officer then proceeds to slam Smith into a wall with his body and repeatedly slams his head into the floor by grabbing his dreads. The release of this video prompted the police department to initiate an internal investigation, resulting in Rodriguez’s termination.

Following his termination, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office wasted no time in charging Rodriguez with misdemeanor assault and battery, as well as willful neglect of duty. The prosecutor’s office emphasized that the ex-cop would be treated like any other citizen, ensuring that justice is served.

However, Rodriguez’s troubles do not end there. He now faces federal civil rights charges for his actions. Special acting agent Devin Kowalski of the FBI Detroit expressed his dismay at the video, stating that it “broke his heart” and labeling the officer’s conduct as “completely unacceptable.” Kowalski commended the Macomb County Prosecutor, the police department, and the US Attorney for their vigorous investigation into the matter.

In addition to the legal repercussions, Smith has filed a civil rights lawsuit against Rodriguez, the city of Warren, and two other officers who were present during the assault but failed to intervene. It is worth noting that Smith still has to address the carjacking charge at a later date.

This incident underscores the importance of holding law enforcement officers accountable for their actions and upholding the trust between communities and the police. The video evidence serves as a reminder that officers must adhere to their oath and the constitution, as opposed to defying it.
