Rep. George Santos (R-NY) narrowly avoided expulsion from the House of Representatives after surviving a vote led by his fellow New York Republicans. The resolution to remove Santos failed, with 179 votes in favor of expulsion and 213 votes against. Notably, 31 Democrats opposed the removal, while 24 Republicans voted to expel him. In addition to the federal charges Santos is facing, including conspiracy, fraud, and identity theft, the House Ethics Committee is still investigating his case. The committee plans to announce its next course of action by November 17. Despite the pressure from the Ethics Committee’s update, Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY), the leader of the expulsion resolution, refused to withdraw it. D’Esposito emphasized the importance of holding members accountable for dishonesty and striving for higher standards in Congress. Santos remained calm and composed leading up to the vote, even tweeting about it. During the debate, Santos defended himself on the House floor, questioning the consistency and potential dangerous precedents set by expelling a member without a conviction. The expulsion vote poses challenges for House Republicans, who already have a slim majority. Losing Santos further complicates their efforts to maintain a majority. However, the expulsion vote could benefit vulnerable New York Republicans, potentially boosting their chances of re-election. House Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), raised concerns about expelling a member without a conviction or recommendation from the Ethics Committee. They worry about the implications for future investigations, including the ongoing inquiry into President Joe Biden. Ultimately, the vote not to expel Santos raises questions about the disqualification of individuals facing federal charges from holding federal office.
