Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s Release from Prison Imminent, Marking a New Chapter in Her Life

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of her mother, Clauddine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard, in 2016, is set to be released from prison on December 28th. Gypsy Rose’s ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, was convicted of first-degree murder for carrying out the killing and received a life sentence. After serving 85% of her sentence as required by Missouri state law, Gypsy Rose will soon regain her freedom.

Gypsy Rose was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition in which a caregiver repeatedly seeks medical attention for the false or exaggerated illness of another person. Her mother, Dee Dee, had a mental health condition called Factitious disorder imposed on another, also known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Dee Dee convinced Gypsy Rose and the public that Gypsy Rose was seriously ill, leading her to endure unnecessary medical treatments and interventions.

The murder of Dee Dee and the abusive treatment Gypsy Rose endured gained worldwide attention. The story has been the subject of numerous documentaries, films, and the Hulu miniseries “The Act,” in which Joey King portrayed Gypsy Rose and Patricia Arquette played Dee Dee. Gypsy Rose has given several interviews from prison, expressing her dissatisfaction with the portrayal of her life in the Hulu series and her belief that she received an excessive sentence for the murder.

In June 2022, Gypsy Rose married Ryan Scott Anderson, although details about their meeting have not been disclosed. Throughout her time in prison, Gypsy Rose has had multiple pen pals.

Dee Dee convinced both Gypsy Rose and others that Gypsy Rose suffered from a multitude of serious illnesses, including cancer, epilepsy, vision and hearing impairments, muscular dystrophy, and quadriplegia. Gypsy Rose was confined to a wheelchair, fed through a tube, and had her head shaved to simulate baldness. Any attempts by Gypsy Rose to assert her independence or deny her illnesses were met with punishment from her mother.

Donations received out of sympathy for Gypsy Rose’s supposed illnesses became a source of income for the family. When Gypsy Rose was believed to be seven years old, they even received a house from Habitat for Humanity. However, Gypsy Rose’s age was manipulated by Dee Dee, who falsified her birth certificate to make her appear younger and more vulnerable.

In 2012, Gypsy Rose, then around 21 years old, met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating website. Their contact continued for three years, during which Godejohn planned to kill Dee Dee and run away with Gypsy Rose. In June 2015, Godejohn visited Springfield, Missouri, and waited for Gypsy Rose’s confirmation that Dee Dee was asleep. He then entered her room and fatally stabbed Dee Dee 17 times. Afterward, Godejohn and Gypsy Rose had sexual relations in her room.

Following the murder, Godejohn and Gypsy Rose fled to Big Bend, Wisconsin, to evade law enforcement. Godejohn posted disturbing content on Dee Dee’s Facebook page, which alarmed her friends and neighbors and ultimately led to the discovery of the body on the same day.
