Auston Matthews has been making waves in the NHL with his remarkable goal-scoring rate that hasn’t been seen in years.
Matthews, a leading player of the Toronto Maple Leafs, recently upped his goal tally for this season to a whopping 50 during the NHL round of the night. He achieved this impressive feat in his 54th game of the season, contributing to Toronto’s 6–3 win over the Arizona Coyotes.
Matthews scored his 50th goal in the first set of the match, which brought the score to 2–0. He later scored his 51st goal in the second period, making the score 4–2.
Not since Mario Lemieux in the 1995–96 season has a player reached 50 goals as quickly as Matthews has — a record that stood for 28 years. At his current scoring pace, Matthews is on track to break the 70-goal mark this season, a feat last achieved by Teemu Selänne and Alexander Mogilnyi in the 1992–93 season when they both scored 76 goals.
Despite the loss to Toronto, the Coyotes’ Finnish forward Matias Maccelli managed to score his team’s opening goal.
In other NHL news, Henri Jokihar of the Buffalo Sabres assisted his team in their 3–2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Buffalo’s Alex Tuch sealed the win with a goal in the third period. Jokiharju assisted Zemgus Girgensons in the second period to level the score. Buffalo’s Finnish goalkeeper Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen also played a key role with 29 saves in the match.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Flyers claimed a 3–1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Despite Colin Blackwell scoring the only goal for Chicago, Travis Sanheim, Travis Konecny, and Garnet Hathaway led the Flyers to victory. Currently, Philadelphia is third in the Metropolis division, trailing the leading NY Rangers by ten points, while Chicago, having a disappointing season, is at the bottom of the Central Division with a significant 17-point gap from Arizona.
