House rejects proposal to decrease White House press secretary’s salary to $1

The attempt to reduce White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s salary to $1 was rejected by the House on Thursday. The amendment, proposed by Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.), was defeated with a vote of 257-165-1, as 54 Republicans joined forces with Democrats against the measure.

During her campaign for the amendment, Tenney criticized Jean-Pierre, referring to her as a “liar” and accusing her of being “anti-Semitic.” Tenney argued that Jean-Pierre had repeatedly lied to the American people, acted condescendingly towards reporters, and violated the Hatch Act. The Hatch Act prohibits executive branch employees from advocating for political or commercial interests while on duty. Tenney specifically pointed out Jean-Pierre’s use of the phrase “MAGA Republicans,” which a watchdog organization deemed a violation of the law.

Tenney’s accusations of anti-Semitism stemmed from a recent controversy where Jean-Pierre initially declined to comment on incidents involving the tearing down of posters depicting Israeli hostages held by Hamas. However, Jean-Pierre later denounced those actions.
