Israeli troops are preparing for a unique battle as they push deeper into Gaza in response to the recent Hamas attacks. Unlike past urban conflicts, this ground attack will largely take place underground in a vast network of tunnels that Hamas has been constructing for over a decade. The Israeli military sees the destruction of these tunnels as a key strategy in their mission. Codenamed Samur, specialized units will navigate the narrow passageways, searching for rocket assembly lines, weapons storage, and the hiding places of Hamas leaders. It is also possible that they may find some of the more than 200 hostages taken by Hamas. The de-tunneling operations will be a significant challenge for the Israeli military, unlike anything they have done before. The Biden administration has sent experienced insurgency experts to advise the Israelis, including three-star Marine Corps Gen. James Glynn. While the fight in Gaza may have some similarities to past operations in Fallujah and Mosul, the unique infrastructure and challenging geography make it a much more difficult environment. Hamas’ tunnel system is advanced, and their fighters are highly trained and equipped. The tunnels stretch for approximately 300 miles and have become so elaborate that the Israeli military has dubbed it the “Gaza Metro.” Over the years, the U.S. has provided assistance and funding to help Israel combat the tunnels. The Israeli military has accused Hamas of diverting construction supplies meant for civilian aid into tunnel-building. A key challenge in this operation will be finding and rescuing the hostages held by Hamas. Specialized units will be trained to enter, clear, and destroy the tunnels. Remote-controlled robots and advanced technology will be used to locate and penetrate the passageways. Some of the tunnels are deep and concrete-lined, making them resistant to heavy bombing. Hamas fighters will use the tunnels to launch surprise attacks on Israeli troops and then retreat underground. The fight for the tunnels in Gaza will be a complex and challenging mission, unlike any previous urban conflict.
