Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has extended an invitation to former President Donald Trump to visit Ukraine’s war zone, asserting that Trump is incapable of managing the ongoing conflict. Zelensky’s remarks came in response to Trump’s previous claims that he could single-handedly end the war with Russia within 24 hours.
During an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker, Zelensky expressed his thoughts on Trump’s assertion, stating, “Former President Trump said that about 24 hours, that he can manage it and finish the war. For me, what can I say? So he’s very welcome as well.” Zelensky emphasized that President Joe Biden’s visit to Ukraine had provided him with a deeper understanding of the situation, which could only be grasped by being present in the country. He then extended an invitation to Trump, mentioning that he would require only 24 minutes to explain the complexities of the conflict.
Back in March, Trump had proclaimed that he could “solve” the Ukrainian war in just one day if he were reelected, arguing that the negotiation process would be straightforward. However, Zelensky refuted Trump’s claims, asserting that ending the war wouldn’t be as simple as Trump believed it to be.
Furthermore, Zelensky stressed that peace negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin were futile, even if Trump were to attempt them. “He can’t bring peace because of Putin,” Zelensky stated. “If he’s not trying and if he’s not ready to give our territory to this terrible man, to Putin, if you are not ready to give it, if you are not ready to give our independence, he can’t manage it.”
When asked whether he believed Trump would support Ukraine in its war if he were to win the 2024 presidential election, Zelensky admitted uncertainty. He expressed hope that American support would hinge not only on the president institutionally but also on the opinion of the American people and society.
