Investigation Launched as Nagpur Doctor Abruptly Abandons Surgery Due to Tea Snub

In a shocking case of medical negligence, a doctor at a government-run hospital in Nagpur abruptly left the operation theatre in the middle of a surgery because he was upset about not being served tea. The incident took place at the local health center in Mauda tehsil on November 3. The doctor, identified as Tejrang Bhalavi, had been scheduled to perform family planning surgeries on eight women that day.

After completing surgeries on four women and administering anesthesia to the remaining patients, Dr. Bhalavi requested a cup of tea from the hospital staff. However, when his request was not fulfilled, he unexpectedly walked out of the operation theatre without completing the remaining surgeries.

Upon learning about Dr. Bhalavi’s departure, the hospital administration contacted the district medical officer, who arranged for another doctor to complete the surgeries on the remaining anesthetized women.

Following the incident, the district administration has launched an inquiry into the matter. Nagpur Zilla Parishad’s CEO, Soumya Sharma, stated that a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident. The committee’s report will determine the appropriate action to be taken against the doctor.

CEO Sharma expressed her concern over the incident and said, “On Friday, November 3, a family planning operation was scheduled at the government hospital in Mauda tehsil. Dr. Tejrang Bhalavi from RH Government Hospital in Ramtek tehsil was called to perform the surgeries. He completed four surgeries and abandoned the remaining four. This information was given to me by a Panchayat Samiti member.”

She further added, “I immediately contacted the health officer of Nagpur Zilla Parishad and requested doctors to perform the remaining surgeries. I was informed that Dr. Bhalavi left because he didn’t receive tea. I have ordered an immediate investigation, and a three-member committee has been formed. Once the report is received, appropriate action will be taken. This is a very serious matter. If doctors are abandoning surgeries over tea, they should be held accountable under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code.”

The incident has raised concerns about the professionalism and commitment of doctors towards their patients. The investigation will shed light on the doctor’s behavior and determine the necessary consequences for his actions.
