Israeli UN Ambassador Calls for Guterres’ Resignation Accusing Him of Aiding Israel’s Enemies

Earlier this week, Gilad Erdan, who currently serves as the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, has publicly issued a call for the resignation of the UN Secretary General, António Guterres. Erdan’s primary reason for this demand stems from his belief that Guterres perceives the role of the UN as being a support system for those who have expressed a desire to bring about the destruction of Israel.

In a statement released on a social media platform, Erdan expressed his dismay over what he perceives as Guterres’ misunderstanding of the UN’s role. He stated, “Unfortunately for all of us, the Secretary General believes that the role of the UN is only to help those who want to destroy Israel and does not understand the role of the UN in the fight against terrorism and to prevent the murder of innocent people in Israel and all over the world.”

Part of Erdan’s critique of Guterres also refers to the Secretary General’s remarks regarding the Security Council’s lack of action in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Israeli offensive on Gaza. Guterres had previously claimed that these instances of inaction have potentially caused irrevocable damage to the authority of the Security Council.

Erdan, however, countered these claims in his message, stating, “Instead of criticizing others, the Secretary General should resign today!” He further argued that the Security Council’s approach to the situation in Gaza was flawed, countering Guterres’ claim by stating that the body has failed to condemn the atrocities committed by Hamas.

Erdan went on to express his disappointment over the lack of global support for Israel in its fight against Hamas terrorism. He criticized Guterres for his inability to recognize his own shortcomings while pointing out the faults in others.

Moreover, Erdan accused the Secretary General of showing sympathy for the massacre of October 7 and focusing solely on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He held Guterres primarily accountable for the UN agencies under his command becoming complicit in terrorism. He further alleged that some of these agencies, particularly the Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), have themselves morphed into full-fledged terrorist organizations.
