Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri has faced criticism from MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough for his response to a clash with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. During a Senate hearing, Hawley insinuated that the DHS endorses antisemitism due to an employee allegedly making anti-Israel comments on social media following the attack by Hamas militants. Mayorkas condemned the suggestion and revealed that he is the child of a Holocaust survivor. However, Hawley attempted to turn the exchange into a victory, posting a caption on Instagram declaring “HAWLEY SMOKES MAYORKAS” and appearing boastful on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.” Scarborough and co-host Willie Geist expressed disbelief at Hawley’s actions, with Scarborough calling it sick and Geist stating that anyone with integrity would have apologized and focused on policy instead. Scarborough posed the question of whether Hawley would still say “I smoked Mayorkas” after learning about the senator’s mother’s history surviving a concentration camp.
