Lalduhoma Sworn-in as Mizoram’s New Chief Minister

In a significant development, Lalduhoma, the leader of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), has been sworn-in as the new chief minister of Mizoram. The ceremony took place at the Raj Bhavan complex in Aizawl, where several other ZPM leaders also took oath as ministers.

The ZPM Legislature Party elected Lalduhoma as its leader and K Sapdanga as the deputy leader earlier this week. Following that, the Val Upa Council, an advisory body of the party, met Lalduhoma to discuss the formation of the council of ministers.

Mizoram, with its 40-member assembly, can have a maximum of 12 ministers, including the chief minister. The ZPM, a political party registered only in 2019, emerged victorious in the recent assembly elections, securing 27 seats. This is a significant increase from their previous tally of 8 seats in the 2018 polls. The party successfully dethroned the Mizo National Front (MNF) led by outgoing chief minister Zoramthanga.

The MNF, which had won 26 seats in the 2018 polls, saw a significant decline in its performance this time, managing to secure only 10 seats.

The appointment of Lalduhoma as the chief minister marks a new era in Mizoram’s political landscape. With the ZPM’s growing popularity, it remains to be seen how the new government will address the challenges and fulfill the aspirations of the people of Mizoram.
