Security Guard in Madhya Pradesh Earns Second Masters Degree in Math After 25-Year Journey
Rajkaran Barua, a security guard and house help in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, has become an inspiration for determination and academic success. Despite earning a meager salary of Rs 5,000 per month, the unassuming 56-year-old recently achieved a post-graduate degree in mathematics from Rani Durgavati University in Jabalpur, adding to his previous Masters degree in archaeology.
Barua’s journey towards his second Masters degree was not an easy one. It spanned a quarter of a century, with 23 unsuccessful attempts over 25 years. Throughout this time, he worked as a security guard during the night and as a house help during the day to support himself and his education.
In an interview with NDTV, Barua shared his study methods and the challenges he faced. Initially, he relied on English books, but the language barrier proved to be a significant hurdle. However, in 2021, he finally passed his exams after studying from a book written by an Indian author.
Barua kept his attempts and struggles a secret from others, as he did not want his employers to taunt their children or belittle them by comparing their education to his. Despite facing insults and harsh treatment from his employers, he persevered, studying late at night on the stairs whenever he found some free time.
When asked about his decision to not marry and have a family, Barua stated, “I am not married. But I am married to my dreams.”
Barua’s incredible journey serves as a testament to his determination, resilience, and unwavering pursuit of knowledge. His story is a reminder that with dedication and hard work, one can overcome any obstacle to achieve their goals.
