Metsä Group Plans 100 Million Euro Investment Program for Mänttä Tissue Paper Factory

Metsä Group, a significant player in the industry, has announced its intentions to launch a substantial investment program geared towards the development and modernization of the operations at the Mänttä tissue paper mill. The initiative aims to extend the mill’s life cycle and optimize its production processes. The company has stated that these investment plans form a crucial part of their tissue business’s Future Factory strategy program, which is targeted at achieving world-class efficiency and environmental performance in the production of tissue paper. The investment program falls into a substantial size category, with the company planning to invest approximately EUR 100 million over a span of five years.

Metsä Group has outlined its objectives for the factory, which include enhancing the plant’s production and environmental efficiency. This will be achieved through the modernization of paper machines and processing lines and improvements in energy and water efficiency. The company’s primary goal is to ensure the long-term sustainability and efficiency of local tissue paper manufacturing in Mänttä. The program is also in line with the company’s ambition to transition to fossil-free products and production facilities by 2030. The company will provide updates and announce further investments as the plans advance.

The company’s objectives and plans were outlined by Joonas Kukkonen, Vice President, Supply Chain, at Forest Tissue Finland and the Baltics.

The first phase of the program will focus on the development of a new hand towel line. The line will be dedicated to the production of virgin fiber-based hand towel papers, primarily for the Finnish market. The preparations for this investment are already underway, and the company plans to have the line operational by 2025.

“The local production of tissue contributes to local employment and boosts society’s sustainability. The investment program planned for the Mänttä factory is a logical next step in our ongoing Future Factory investment in Mariestad, Sweden. It also complements our planned tissue factory investment in Great Britain and various other investments in our international factory network. This program will allow us to modernize our operations in Finland as well,” says Joonas Kukkonen.
