In a recent interview with ABC News, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, assured that the Israeli army will provide “safe passage for the civilian population” in light of the planned military offensive on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. This statement comes amidst growing concerns of a potential “catastrophe” that could arise from the assault. Despite international apprehension regarding the potential devastation in a city densely populated with over a million Palestinians, Netanyahu stands firm in his belief that the offensive is crucial to quash Hamas.
During the interview, Netanyahu expressed his confidence that “Victory is within reach. We will do it. We will take the remaining terrorist battalions of Hamas and Rafah, which is the last bastion, but we will do it,” he said. He then reiterated that they will execute the assault while ensuring the safe evacuation of civilians. Netanyahu revealed that a comprehensive plan to ensure this is currently being developed. He also pointed out the areas to the north of Rafah that have already been cleared, suggesting they could be utilized as safe zones for the civilian population.
However, the Gaza authorities have expressed grave concerns about the impending attack on Rafah, warning that it could result in “tens of thousands” of casualties. Likewise, EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borell, echoed similar sentiments, stating that such an offensive “would lead to an unspeakable humanitarian catastrophe”.
Al Jazeera, a prominent broadcaster, has reported that an overnight Israeli attack east of Rafah resulted in 25 fatalities. There were also other individuals who sustained injuries. The report further stated that a building was hit during the attack.
